The LP was finally issued in monotheir first album not to be issued in stereo since Surfin' U. Despite being a departure from the Beach Boys sound that pervaded prior efforts, the album was a commercial success; Today! The album is described as a foreshadowing of the later Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds. But Today! InToday!

San Francisco’s Bobby Freeman, a full-blooded Choctaw, wrote and recorded the R&B smash hit “Do You Want to Dance” in when he was Here, the Beach Boys give his classic.

Neither side of the single appeared on a regular Beach Boys LP. "Break Away" made its album debut in as part of the Spirit of America compilation, and then the UK compilation 20 Golden Greats, in "Celebrate the News" also appeared on Rarities with an alternate version.

"Do You Wanna Dance?" was recorded on January 11, at Gold Star Studios and was produced, arranged and conducted by Brian Wilson. Take 3 of the song was used as the master. The song was first released in in mono on the band's album Today! with a stereo remix of the song being released in on the stereo remaster of that same album.
